Course Description

HIS-101: History of Pentecostalism provides students with a comprehensive study of the historical development of the Pentecostal movement from its biblical beginnings in the Book of Acts to its worldwide impact in the twenty-first century. Students will discover how God has repeatedly poured out His Holy Spirit throughout history to awaken the Church, inspire revival, empower believers, and advance the Gospel to the nations.

The course traces the continuation of Spirit-filled Christianity through the early church, examines significant revivals throughout church history, and explores the events that led to the modern Pentecostal movement. Special attention is given to the ministries of Charles Parham, William J. Seymour, the Azusa Street Revival, and the rapid global expansion of Pentecostal missions.

Students will also examine the influence of Pentecostalism on evangelism, world missions, church planting, worship, healing, prayer, and the restoration of spiritual gifts. The course emphasizes that Pentecostalism is not merely a denomination or historical movement but a continuing work of the Holy Spirit empowering believers to proclaim Jesus Christ throughout the world.

Through Scripture study, historical research, workbook assignments, chapter quizzes, personal reflection, and ministry application, students will develop a greater appreciation for their spiritual heritage and be challenged to become active participants in the continuing work of the Holy Spirit today.

Expected Student Outcome

Upon completing HIS-101, students will understand the historical development of Pentecostal Christianity from the Day of Pentecost through the major revival movements that shaped the modern Church. Students will recognize their place in God’s continuing redemptive work and be inspired to serve faithfully in evangelism, discipleship, church planting, leadership development, and global missions. They will view themselves as part of a continuing movement of Spirit-filled believers committed to proclaiming Jesus Christ until He returns.
